The J-45 was Gibson’s first foray into the dreadnought shape, and is considered to be Gibson’s most popular and widely-used acoustic. Its round-shouldered design offers an accessible, comfortable playing experience. With Gibson’s 2019 version, a number of tweaks offer a refreshed sound, while retaining the timeless looks and feel that put the J-45 on the map.
Body & Neck:
Gibson’s Avant-Garde range has been designed with the modern player in mind. Striking the balance between classic Gibson design and modern performance demands, expect a playability like nothing you’ve felt before.
While the J-45 was traditionally a Mahogany guitar, this version features Walnut back & sides. This means less low-end sustain, more sparkling brightness and midrange clarity. Combined with the traditional Sitka Spruce top, the J-45 AG Walnut offers a brilliant contemporary tone – a perfect studio guitar.
The two-piece Maple neck adds yet more dense brightness to the tonal palette, with a cutaway and Gibson’s advanced response neck offering a wholly comfy, ergonomic playing experience.
Hardware & Electronics
Richlite is used for both the fretboard and bridge; this dark but highly durable material is smooth and doesn’t age like natural tonewoods. This means that the J-45 AG simply won’t have problems with wear & tear, consistent resonance or bridge stability.
The LR Baggs Element makes a return for the 2019 range; its under-saddle design relies entirely on the vibration of the soundboard. This means that your plugged-in sound won’t buzz or twang, but rather sing the way you want it to – what’s not to love?
