Bass Guitar and Distortion

22 Apr 2016 Views

Bass guitar is played in all kinds of music and bass distortion is a big yes today! Many people are unaware that in majority of the rock bands, the bass guitar sound is not clean but colored. Bass drive and distortion in India was only considered a thing may be 4 years ago. It’s really early here. Bass distortion has been rumbling since the late 80’s. And that's a fact, of course the tone and sound got better over the years. Heavier styles of music require punchy and a cut through aggressive tone that backs electric guitars as they play riffs. Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse has a signature sound that he plays on his Spector bass. He like many other metal bass players use well known brands like Darkglass Electronics, Tech 21 etc., which are available in India today and serious bass players are now purchasing drive pedals and using them live as well as in recordings. When I started playing bass guitar, I was genuinely confused as to how bass players get that raunchy sound, even grunge bands of the 90’s, all have bass overdrive/distortion in their recordings. Mike Starr of Alice in Chains used his signature Spector bass, his sound is one of my favorite bass tones of the 90’s after which Mike Inez came in later and had pretty much the same set up as Starr like the Spector bass that created that signature sound. Majority of the Spector artists use good bass distortion and that combined sound is nothing less than legendary. I run my favorite drive pedal confidently on all stages now and it has become a part of my sound and style. Some genres do need classic low end clean sound, like Hip-Hop, RnB and Bollywood sessions that I do. But I have incorporated parts where I’d like to stand out and sound powerful. The next time you are at a store trying out a Spector bass, try out a bass distortion pedal with it. And you have unleashed awesomeness. -Roop Thomas Philip
