My Tips For Line Out Connection From Electronic Keyboard

It is very essential to choose a good quality cable (1/4” to 1/4”) and to ensure proper connection of the same in the sound mixer of PA system.

It is a common complaint every musician has that their keyboard is not sounding as well which is on either headphones or on the on-board speaker (in case of an arranger keyboard). It is not a problem on the keyboard or a keyboard with on-board speaker but is just because of improper connection from keyboard to mixer.

All the arranger keyboards have styles playing in stereo on their speakers. Even on the music workstations, sounds are always in mono but the effects used in the sound, arpeggio or drum patterns are in stereo. To play in stereo one needs to use both Left & Right out from the keyboard. Almost all the professional keyboards have separate Left and Right Audio Outs (Lines Out). Also in the current era even the smallest sound mixers have Lines in which have both Left & Right inputs. One should therefore use 2 separate cables out from the keyboard to the Line-in on the mixer for connection. Using a single stereo cable from the keyboard will not produce a stereo sound through a mixer.

Good quality cables (like VOX cables) with proper connections will ensure the same stereo sound from your amplified keyboard through a PA system on stage as you may hear on headphones or on-board speakers.
